Organic cultivation of Ajwain

            Today we will discuss about Ajwain.


It is a member of lamiaceae. It is an important ayurvedic plants. It is mainly used in meat and fish dishes. It leaves produces Sthaim oil, which is used as an Ayurvedic medicine. It's oil is used in breathe related problems such as Asthma and Bronchitis, along with it the oil purifies Kidney, blood and eye, It is also used to prepare perfume and wine.


                          suitable land.

It is a Rabi Crop. The soil with good water draining capacity is good for it's cultivation. The pH value of soil should be 6.5-8.2 is considered good for it's production. The land with low moisture should have proper irrigation system in it.


                               Climate.

 For it's cultivation,dry weather is suitable for it's cultivation. Excessive cold and hot condition are not suitable for it's cultivation. It's plants can bear cold at some extent.


                      Preparation of land.


The 1st ploughing should be done by using Soil twister and after it the 2nd and 3rd ploughing should be done using simple plough or cultivator. It seeds are to minute so that make the particles of the soil too minute by ploughing.

 
                   Manure and fertilizers.

20-25 days before the harvesting, 15-20 tons of spoiled cowdung in the farm, along with it as a fertlizer use 20kg/heactare of Nitrogen, 30kg/heactare of phosphorus and 20kg/heactare of potash in it. Half the given amount of Nitrogen and full amount of phosphorus and potash before the harvesting of seeds and after 30days of harvesting use remaining amount of  the Nitrogen.


                   Seed rate and harvesting.

The best time of it's harvesting is from September to November. It can be harvested either be sprinkling or by sowing in line method. For 1 heactare upto 4-5kg of seeds are required. By sprinkling methods the seeds are mixed with more minute particles of the soil and are sprinkled in the farm. For lime methods, line-line distance should be 30-40cm and plant-plant distance should be 15-20cm.


                         Irrigation and Tilling.

It crops can bear dryness upto an extent. It can be cultivated in both irrigated and unirrigated place. Generally, it requires upto 2-3times of irrigation. When plants turn to 15-20 cm in length then there is the need of tilling in it. Upto 3-4 times of tilling is required to prevent the weeds in it.


                         Cutting and production.

When crops turn to yellow after it's ripping and fruits turn into brown then the crops become ready to be cut. Generally, it's crop get ready in 140-160 days of harvesting. After cutting the crops should be dried and the seeds are separated from the straws. In 1 heactare upto 1-1.5 tons of production is obtained.
